The Basics Of Bartending: Terms & Definitions

When you're having friends over your house and you want to impress them, what better way to do it than to bartend for them?

What is even more impressive is if you know the how to describe exactly what you are doing - with the correct terms.

Here is a lists of basic bartending techniques that you might find handy to throw around in conversation:

  • Shaking - By definition shaking is to move or sway with short, quick, irregular, vibratory movements. Shaking is heavily involved with bartending.
  • Straining - Straining is to pour (liquid containing solid matter) through a filter, sieve, or the like in order to hold back the denser solid constituents. You usually strain liquid after mixing the product.
  • Stirring - To move one's hand or an implement continuously or repeatedly through (a liquid or other substance) in order to cool, mix, agitate, dissolve, etc., any or all of the component parts.
  • Mixing - to combine (substances, elements, things, etc.) into one mass, collection, or assemblage, generally with a thorough blending of the constituents.
  • Muddling - to mix up in a confused or bungling manner; jumble.

In order to fully understand how to conduct these terms, it is important to attend a bartending academy school.
